The 6-Man Interim Management Committee recently inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuke Ameachi had since begun work in the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron. Their mandate is to implement the recommendations made on the best way to  restructure and reposition the nation’s premier maritime training and education centre  for global competitiveness.

Addressing Directors and Heads of Departments in the institution, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Adebayo Sarumi said the Committee’s recommendations is targeted towards translating the Change Agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Academy into tangible terms.

 He noted that the Federal Government is committed to reviving the mission and vision of the institution, which was established, with the aim of developing qualified personnel for the maritime sector.

Chief Sarumi explained that the restructuring and repositioning exercise would call for the review of the Academy’s Act.

According to him, the supervisory role of the Ministry, the institution’s curricula, training facilities, allocation and spacing of physical facilities to suit academics as well as Cadets related activities and the functions and processes of support departments would also be reviewed.



While the Rector of the Academy, Commodore Duja Effedua (Rtd.) admitted that his relationship with the Staff would be defined by their commitment to their work, “you can make me succeed, but you cannot make me fail” he stressed. Engr. Olu Akinsoji, On his part, said that the Committee came as a last resort for the Academy to attain expectations of its founding fathers, in his words “We are here to right the wrongs”.

The Committee which arrived the Academy last Thursday was divided into 6 sub-committees, each headed by a member commenced intensive work with Directors and Departmental Heads.

The sub-committees are the Registry arm chaired by the former Administrator of the Academy, Engr. I. Olu Akinsoji; the Nautical arm chaired by former CEO, Nigerian Shippers Council, Capt. Adamu Biu; the  Marine Engineering Arm chaired by CEO of Starzs Investment Company, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun; the Maritime Safety arm chaired by the Rector of the Academy, Commodore Duja Effedua (Rtd.) assisted by the Director of MAN Consultancy, Dr. Kevin Okonna; while Arc. Otu Ita Otoyo, assisted by the Rector chaired the Works and Services arm, the last sub-committee, the Finance Arm has the Rector as Chairman.

Meanwhile, the Registrar of the Academy, Dr. Mkpandiok A. Mkpandiok had on Wednesday officially informed Directors and Heads of Departments of the Academy of the formal inauguration of an interim Management Committee and the appointment of a Rector for the institution.



This he said was in line with the efforts of the Federal Government to restructure and reposition the Academy for global best practices and sued for the cooperation of all to help fast-track the process of repositioning the institution.

He described the Rector, Commodore Duja Effedua as a  retired Naval top notch and perfect gentleman.

It could be recalled that the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuke Ameachi had in January 2017 inaugurated a Ministerial Committee comprising experts in the different fields of the maritime sector to ascertain the situation in the Academy and advise Government on how best the institution can be restructured and repositioned to be at par with its counterparts the world over.
