The Acting Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Dr. Mkpandiok A. Mkpandiok has reiterated his administration’s commitment towards ensuring that the nation’s premier maritime education and training centre realises its vision of becoming internationally recognised as a centre of excellence. He made this known during a courtesy visit on him by the Executive members of the Akwa Ibom Students Parliament in his office recently.

The helmsman who was reacting to the Speaker of the association’s remarks about equipping Nigerian Students with entrepreneurial skills noted that his administration’s thrust at the development of the Academy is a drastic departure from the past, as Cadets’ Projects and interest are his Management's top priority.

Dr. M.A. Mkpandiok hinted that he has already allocated a building to be used as a Centre for the Entrepreneurial development of Cadets. Acknowledging the supremacy of God in the affairs of men, he said his administration would do anything within the ambit of its power to see to the actualisation of the “Change Begins With Me” initiative of President Mohammad Buhari, and ensure it becomes a part of life of those in the Academy.

The physically elated Acting Rector further appreciated the Students for their zest at restoring some decency on Nigerian campuses and expressed optimism that their programmes will go a long way to restore good morals in the youth.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Parliament and a final year student of the Communication Arts Department of the University of Uyo, Hon. Raphael Okon said the association is poised to carve a niche for the Nigerian Students.

He noted that the association was borne out of the need to raise students who would not sit on the fence and criticise government anytime things go wrong rather would contribute meaningfully to salvage situations whenever the needs arises.

The Speaker who said the Parliament was established after the 2011 Uniuyo Crisis said the Parliament is made up of Students from the various tertiary institutions in the State.

He added that the Students Parliament is aimed at ensuring that Students imbibe a culture of respect as well as coordinate intellectual and academic exercises through collective ideas, interactive sessions, sensitization campaigns amongst others in the various institutions in Akwa Ibom State, an effort he said would keep crisis at bay.

Rahael Okon stated that apart from the Parliament’s  current sensitisation tour to different campuses tagged “Campus Tour Against Social Vices”, they also run a programme tagged SCAM, where they advocate Entrepreneurial Skills for Students.

The highpoint of the event was the conferment of the Youth Ambassador Award on the Acting Rector in view of his contributions to the development of the youths for the Maritime sector, an award that conveys the prefix “His Excellency” to the name of the Acting Rector. The courtesy call culminated with the Association’s  presentation of a birthday cake to the Acting Rector.
