Press Release: MAN ACTING RECTOR TASKS HOST COMMUNITY ON GOOD CONDUCTS

The Acting Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Mr. Mkpandiok A. Mkpandiok has advised the people of Oro Nation against acts of blackmail, petition writing and character assassination urging them rather to remain supportive of the plans of the Federal Government to make the Academy a world-class Maritime institution in no distant time.

This the Acting Rector said during a courtesy visit on him by the Executive Members of MAN, Host Community Relations Committee in his office, recently.

The CEO congratulated the Chairman and Members on their appointment as the third successive  executives of the contiguous Host Community to the Academy and expressed gratitude to them for providing a rancour-free environment for the Academy’s successful operations.

The elated helmsman appreciated them for the confidence reposed in his administration and promised to remain firm in his determination to steer the Academy’s ship to safe berthing.

He intimated the Committee members of the Federal Government’s preparedness to transform the Academy to a University, expressing hope that with an upgrade in facilities and curriculum the Academy would be ready for the transformation. He further solicited peaceful coexistence between all the people constituting the Host Communities to allow time for meaningful development.

Apparently impressed by the leadership style of Mr. Mkpandiok A. Mkpandiok, members who took their turns to speak commended the Acting Rector for his administration’s stand on Government’s policy of transparency, discipline, teamwork and anti-corruption as well as his Management’s prompt attention to Corporate Social Responsibility matters.

First to speak was the Chairman of the Committee, Pastor Bassey O. Umoh, who noted that as an agent of positive change, the Acting Rector’s  tenure has showcased a very high level of leadership within the short period it has existed.

According to the Committee Chairman, Mr. M. A. Mkpandiok has established sound academic culture and brought back the serene, regimented academic environment the Academy was reputed for.He expressed hope that Mr. Mkpandiok would be confirmed as substantive  Rector of the Academy to enable the institution regain its past glory.

The Committee Chairman appealed to the Management of the institution to sustain its Corporate Social Responsibility to the Host Communities through training of their youths in various skills, including involving them in the Academy’s Short Courses Training Programme, Award of Contracts in line with the Federal Government’s Local Content Policy, Upholding of Admission Quota to the Host Community; Award of Scholarship to indigent Cadets and Students of Eyo Abasi Host Community, as well as financial assistance for the upkeep of the Committee, among other requests.

Speaking separately, a former Permanent Secretary in Akwa Ibom State Government and a prominent daughter of Oro, Mrs. Ivy Esin, and former Vice Chairman of Oron Local Government Area, Hon. Okon Asuquo Eyo described the Acting Rector as a seasoned administrator with unwavering commitment and deep passion for the repositioning of the institution to meet international best practices.

They noted that the entire Oro Nation will remain ever grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari if the Academy becomes a University and Mr. Mkpandiok who holds a distinguished record as an astute administrator and once lecturer in the Academy is given the opportunity to mid-wife the headship of the institution to its University Status.

“From our findings, the present Acting Rector of the Academy had worked directly with not less than five past Rectors of the Academy and could be termed a thorough-bred, therefore, if you keenly follow the staff progression indices and events in the Academy, you will conclude that the search for a qualified substantive Rector for the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron is not supposed to be a hard search, if the track records of the current Acting Rector/Registrar of MAN Oron were placed on a scale” they posited.

It could be recalled that the MAN Community Relations Committee was established in 2001 to serve as a mediator between the community and the Academy, and the Committee had since been playing significant roles in the development of the institution.
