Press Release: NIMASA STAKEHOLDERS FORUM AND THE WAY FORWARD

The first Stakeholders Forum organised by NIMASA in 2016 highlighted the Agency’s two new areas of focus which have to do with, firstly, drafting a Medium Term Strategy Document or Business Plan covering a three-year period of 2016-2019. Secondly, embarking on a comprehensive structural, cultural and performance reform.

These highlights were made known by the dynamic and proactive Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Peterside Dakuku when he presented his formal address at the event which held in Eko Hotels and Suites, Victora Island, Lagos recently. The DG stressed that the agency was on a mission of self-discovery to enable it return to its core mandate.

The event which had in attendance the creame de la creame of the maritime sector also had members of the Medium Term Strategy Document Committee on board, among them Barr. (Mrs.) Margaret Orakwasi and Dr. Engr. Anthony Anayo Ishiodu, the Acting Rector of Maritime Academy Of Nigeria, Oron.

From the first paper presented on the occasion, which was on “The Role of Maritime Safety Administration and Regulatory Reforms,” through the second on “ Cabotage and Industry Capacity Building” to the fifth paper which dwelt on “Piracy and Armed Robbery At Sea”, each speaker highlighted the operations of the Agency in the past, the now and what should obtain in the future, if NIMASA is to be the No. 1 regulator in the maritime industry, not just in Nigeria but in Africa.

Also contributing, a former Director General of NIMASA, Barr. Temisan Omatseye advised the Agency to revert to its original  structure and implement same and to stop operating the NMA structure.

Lamenting the graduates of Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) roaming our streets just like the graduands of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, without the Mandatory Sea Time Experience, for lack of Ships, he stressed that the intention of having another maritime academy in the Country was for the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron to set up the Academy in any approved area from suggested areas of Lokoja, Badagry, etc and that it was not the intention or plan of NIMASA to operate the said Academy.

The Academy’s delegation to the event was led by the Acting Rector, Engr. (Dr.) Anthony Ishiodu, and included the Director of Works, Jide Kupoluyi and the Head, Public Relations, Mr Siddi E. Mkpandiok.
