Press Release: We Are Transforming Progressively and I Make Bold To Say That MAN, Oron Will Award Degrees – Joshua Okpo

Those were the words of the affable, astute and passion driven Administrator, the Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Dr.  (Amb.) Joshua Okpo, during a Thanksgiving Service organised in his honour by a group of Pentecostal and Orthodox Ministers on account of his re-appointment for another 4 year tenure as the Rector of the Academy by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

“Gratitude”, according to Zig Zigler, “is the healthiest of all human emotions, the more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for”. This and many more seem to be on the minds of the Rector and his friends who organised the event as they led other friends, family members, Management and Well Wishers to The Testimony Assembly Church at Eyetong Road, Oron to thank God for a successful first tenure and the commencement of the Rector’s second tenure.

Dr. Joshua Okpo expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for the confidence reposed in him and for his show of love towards the Academy and promised to deliver on his mandate. Acknowledging himself as a vessel sent by God to bring fruition to God’s plans for the Academy, the Maritime Industry, Nigeria and the World at large, he called on all stakeholders in Oro Nation and beyond to join hands with him to take Academy to greater heights.

He emphasised that the Academy, as a Specialised Institution caters for Lower, Middle and Higher Level Manpower for the Maritime Industry as stipulated by the International Maritime Organisation, is a Nautical College which was established basically to train Mariners who will man the Gulf of Guinea and the nation’s sea trade.

Clearing the air on the specialised nature of the Academy, Dr. Okpo said that the Certificate of Competence (COC) issued by the Academy, which enables its graduates work anywhere in the world, is renewable every six months, different from certificates issued by other conventional universities adding that the NUC or Ministry of Education do not issue such.

He stressed that as the CEO of the Academy he is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that government’s mission and policy concerning the Academy is fulfilled. “We are always conscious in our actions as a Management, to make the Academy compete in standards with other reputable Maritime Training institutions the world over”, he asserted.

Explaining further, he affirmed that there are other tertiary institutions within and outside the country awarding degrees up to PhD level without the “University” toga and called on all right thinking individuals to desist from using the Academy as a platform for politicking as this is detrimental to the growth of the institution, the Maritime Industry and the Country as a whole. He therefore called for all hands to be on deck while promising to use his office, as the Chief Accounting Officer, to transform the Academy and the landscape of Oro Nation.

In his homily titled “Understanding the Working Power of God’s Grace” (1 Corinthians 15: 10; a text earlier read by the Rector)the Presiding Bishop of Testimony Assembly, Pastor Kaiso Okpo (with no relationship with the Rector) defined Grace to mean when God puts His ability in a man to make him do certain things for the glory of His name, adding that the type of Grace one carries defines the nature of the challenges he faces in the course of doing his work.

Mentioning strong character development as one of the basic ways to sustain God’s Grace, the man of God noted that the development of any nation hinges on peace, God’s glory and goodwill among men. He admonished present day Nigerians to see this virtue as very critical for the manifestation of God’s glory in their various assignments.

Pastor Kaiso Okpo further called on the Rector to pay deaf ears to backbiters, be focused and reason intelligently in the course of his work while giving him the assurance that God will always be with him.

Apostle Princewill Arabor from Abuja who was one of the many Ministers on board, anchored an aspect of the programme where he extolled the extraordinary qualities of Dr. Joshua Okpo which set him aside as an exceptional leader.

When the Rector and Management team danced before the Alter, it reminded many of the Biblical Davidic Dance of joy and jubilation

The highpoints of the epoch making event featured administration of Anointing Oil on the Rector and prayers for him, the Management and the Academy.
