Ambassador tasks Committee on Peace

The Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Ambassador Joshua Okpo has inaugurated a Peace Trust Fund Committee (Ambassador Joshua Okpo Peace Trust Committee) and charged them on the essence of promoting peace. Speaking during the inauguration of the Committee at the nation’s prestigious premier maritime institution, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, last Friday, the Peace Ambassador expressed concern over the tense atmosphere surrounding the forthcoming national elections and urged members not to relent on their role of being agents of peace in their spheres of influence. “Nigeria is going through trying times, elections are coming, the drums of war are beating, preach peace wherever you go. This Country, our Country must remain one,” he stressed.

He explained that from the day the Ambassadorial status was conferred on him, he had ceased to be a private person and expressed optimism over the capability of persons in the Trust Fund to deliver.

The Administrator par excellence, whose administrative ingenuity has earned him several accolades across the globe, reiterated that dedication to duty and hard work are the needed recipe to fast track global peace mandate which is the basis for which the Committee is being established.

He noted that considering the global nature of the award the selection of Committee members was based on their excellent personality and humane nature and therefore urged them to liaise with other Human Rights and Peace Organisations, to scout for both human and material resources and also raise funds within and outside the Country for interventions where necessary. “You are to raise funds within and outside the country with the sole purpose of committing the funds to the wellbeing of mankind. You are also to intercede on issues that bother on refugees, war victims and all other people who are being deprived, in one way or the other,” he emphasised.

He urged the Committee to establish a working Secretariat in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States which will create channels of communication with other humanitarian Organisations the world over, in a bid to actualise its mandate.

Also speaking, the visibly elated Acting Registrar of the Academy, Barr. Asuquo Ntekim, expressed joy over the conferment of the global award on the Rector saying it is a well deserved honour and thanked the Ambassador for placing the Academy on the world map through his administrative acumen. He said, “To be associated with this assignment we are really grateful and thankful to His Excellency for considering us worthy to pilot this ship with him.

Glowingly appraising the Rector’s giant strides in the Institution especially his role at instituting peace in the immediate host communities (Eyo Abasi and Idua), Barr Ntekim affirmed that the Management is proud to be associated with him.

Analysing the biblical emphasis on love the Acting Registrar added that the greatest thing one could do to humanity is to love and care for the poor which according to him is the objective of the Trust Fund Committee. “Anybody that has deficiency is poor, so to take care of the poor is one of the greatest thing one can do and this is exactly the objective of the Committee,” he observed.

Accepting the responsibility, the Chairman of the Committee, Dr.  Kevin Okonna Okonna thanked the Peace Ambassador of the United Nations for the confidence reposed on his Committee and emphasised that they will take the message of peace wherever they go.

He noted that the Committee has a duty to deliver on the its Terms of Reference.  “Much is expected from the Ambassador, quite a lot is expected from the embassy, so by our inauguration as members of the Trust Fund I fully accept the responsibility that it is the Trust Fund that will propel the objectives and values of that embassy,” he emphasised.

He promised that the Committee would do everything possible within its power to ensure success on its mandate of contributing to world peace. “I want to again, on behalf of the Committee members appreciate you and thank you for this responsibility and also make a solemn promise that accord with the objectives of achieving world peace that we will put in our best to achieving the Terms of Reference of this Trust Fund,” he assured.

Dr. Okonna formally congratulated Ambassador Joshua Okpo on his high level achievements which have placed him and the Academy in general on the global map. He emphasised that the ambassadorial status conferment on the Academy’s Rector is a reward for his passion towards the development of humanity.

It will be recalled that on the 3rd of January 2015, an arm of the United Nations, The International Organisation of Advocates for Global Peace and Development recognised the Rector, the then Mr  Joshua Okpo as a Global Peace Ambassador in an event which would best be described as mother of events for the year.

A delegation of Oro Professionals and Technocrats under the umbrella of “Oron Concerned Citizens” paid a courtesy call on the modern pride of Oron, nation, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron. On their arrival at the Institution, the delegation proceeded on a facility tour of the Academy.

While addressing the Rector and Management team, the leader of the delegation, Dr (Prince) Edet Ekerendu, a retired Federal Permanent Secretary praised the efforts and the unprecedented monumental development the Institution has attended in just a few years of the administration of Amb. Joshua Okpo. He observed that if other past administrators were as committed to the development of the Academy, the Institution would have achieved international standard thereby enhancing professionalism in the maritime industry.

He also expressed worry over the non-upgrading of the Academy to a University. According to him, “We are overwhelmed with the uncommon transformation in the Academy and are happy to be associated with the administration of Amb. Joshua Okpo”. He stated that they were concerned and worried that an Institution with such physical and manpower development do not having a training vessel for the Cadets. The leader of the team pledged that he and his team will make efforts to approach those in authority and appeal to them to acquire a training ship for the Academy before the end of the year 2015, and to also make the Academy’s Jetty functional and beneficial for the good of the host community and the country.

In his response, the Rector of MAN Oron, Amb. Joshua Okpo thanked the delegation for the affection they have shown on the progress of the Academy. According to him, they have every right to know what is going on in the institution and to contribute to the meaningful development of the institution.
The Rector also said that he has briefed the President, the Hon. Minister of Transport and relevant bodies concerned on the need to upgrade the specialized institution to a degree awarding status. “The Academy believes in and engage in dialogue for everything it needs”, The Rector stressed.
In terms of practical sea-time training, the Rector said he has made a lot of contacts and also signed a few MOU’S with in Georgia, Turkey and the Philippines, to see how the Academy can partner with such Institutions to upgrade MAN, Oron to international standard. He then tasked the team to assist the Academy in appealing to individuals, Governments and Corporate Organizations to assist in any way to improve the funding of MAN, Oron. While appreciating the Government of Akwa-Ibom State for donating land to the Academy, the white paper on the land acquisition it gave to the Academy was still being expected to ensure that the land becomes the property of the academy.

In a vote of thanks, the Director, School of Maritime Studies, Dr. Mrs. A.A Mkpandiok commended the delegation for their concern in the growth of the Academy. She said that the ultimate goal of the Academy is to produce good and competent seafarers that will compete favourably well in the maritime market and not necessarily to be worried about the attainment of University level. She however noted that such will come as a plus to the institution since the Academy is already making efforts on attaining degree awarding status. She charged them to extend the same gesture to the Oron community by enlightening the populace on issues that will improve their lives, especially by keeping the environment of Oron town clean; stressing that littered refuse could be harmful to the health of residents.

The management of the Academy wishes to invite all the candidates who selected Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom State as their 2nd Choice but did not participate during the previous screening exercise and have scored the minimum of 120 marks (National cut-off-mark) for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education to attend the Post JAMB UTME screening exercise as follows:

6.  Requirements for the Screening Exercise:

  Candidates are requested to report for the screening with the following:

            i)             JAMB result print-out

      ii)           Original copy of credentials (including First  School Leaving Certificate).

          iii)  Candidate’s Photo Card printed from the portal

          iv)   Original copy of Birth Certificate/Age Declaration.

          v)  Original copy of Certificate of Local Government/State of Origin.

        vi)         A pair of White Canvas and Socks.

       vii)        White Short and Vest.

     viii)       Blanket.

        ix)          Bucket and Drinking Cup.

         x)           Toiletries.



7.     Medical Test/Screening:


In view of the unique nature of the Maritime Academy and the requirements for the training of seafarers, all candidates must be subjected to a comprehensive medical test before admission.


 Consequently, all candidates are requested to pay the sum of N2,500.00 as screening fee online and upon arrival at the Academy additional N15,000.00 is to be paid for medical test to cover the following tests:


             1)   Chest X-ray

             2)   Packed cell volume

             3)   Hepatitis  Surface Antigen

             4)   Genotype

             5)   TB Serology

            6)   Pregnancy Test

            7)   Blood Group

            8)   Urinalysis

            9)   Visual Acuity


 8.     Procedure for Online Payment:


1.     Log on to


2.     Click on registration and select “Application Form”.


3.     Click on “Purchase Form”.


4.       Enter the following details: First Name, Middle Name, Surname, Email, Phone Number, Choice of Program (e.g.ND), Choice of Course.



5.        Note: for ND applications you will be prompted to enter your JAMB Reg. No., JAMB year and JAMB Score when applying for all courses.


6.           Click “Continue” and on the next page, your remita RRR code will be displayed for you (you can note it down).


7.           Click on “Click Here to Pay”.


8.           Choose mode of payment e.g. online payment or Bank Branch.


9.           For online payment, enter your card details.


10.   An exam number will be generated for you; this will be your  log in ID.


11.   Log in with your exam number as user ID and 2016/2017 as password.


12.        Click “Complete Registration”.


13.       For Bank Branch Payment print remita invoice which contains your RRR code.


14.        Proceed to the designated banks to make payment.


15.       An exam number will be generated for you; this will be your log in ID


16.       Log in with your exam number as user ID and 2016/2017 as password


17.        Click “Complete Registration”.




9.     Feeding/Accommodation:


        Accommodation would be provided free to all candidates, while arrangement would be made in respect of feeding on pay-as-you-eat basis.



However, candidates are expected to come with sufficient amount of money for their feeding.
