HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL OF MARITIME STUDIES
The School of Maritime Studies (SMS) offers ND, HND and Post Graduate Studies in the broad spectrum of Maritime Transport operations. Graduates from the school help to meet the manpower needs in the insurance, shipping operations and ancillary sub-sector of the Nigerian maritime and other related industries. The school opened for lectures in 1994.

STAFFING AND FACILITIES

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DEPARTMENTS
The School of Maritime Studies comprises of two departments, namely, Maritime Transport Department and Business Studies Department. The two departments jointly run the under-listed programmes.

1. NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN MARITIME TRANSPORT AND BUSINESS STUDIES

This is a two-year programme comprising of four (4) semesters. There is an additional 3-4 months of Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) which takes place at the end of the second semester and terminates before the commencement of the third semester.

GOALS OF THE PROGRAMME

The goal of the programme is the education and training of cadets to enable them perform creditably, the functions of supervisory and junior managerial staff in the operations, administrative and finance departments of shipping companies, shipping agencies, ports, oil companies, off-shore oil support companies, manufacturing companies and organizations dealing with the import and export of goods.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME:

The objectives of the programme are to:
  • Develop background knowledge common to all sectors of the maritime industry;
  • Communicate intelligently with professional practitioners in the maritime industry;
  • Provide specially trained managerial and supervisory work-force for the maritime industry;
  • Provide the knowledge and skills necessary for effective and efficient performance of supervisory duties in any business organization.

2. HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN MARITIME TRANSPORT AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Maritime Transport and Business Management is a two-year programme comprising four (4) semesters.

GOAL OF THE PROGRAMME
The goal of the programme is the education and training of cadets to enable them perform managerial functions creditably in the maritime industry and other allied industries in general.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The Objectives of the programme are to:-

  1. Assist in improving the capability of shippers and consignees to protect their own interests.
  2. Be able to effectively and efficiently manage operations of all transport modes.
  3. Provide students with the aptitude and skills necessary to effectively plan and implement transport and distribution logistics.
  4. Enable the students appreciate the role of management accounting as a tool in ports and shipping management.
  5. Provide the students with the cognitive and analytical skills to make the right investment proposals and management decisions in business.

3. POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SHIPPING AND TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT

The PGD in Shipping and Transport Management has a good mixture of operational and professional shipping knowledge. The programme is full time. All courses are complementary in the way that course participants are challenged to approach maritime related issues from different perspectives and from the position of different supply chain players, e.g. from the position of a shipping company, port authority, national or regional governmental body, maritime inspection authority, shipbroker, freight forwarder, stevedore, logistics company or financial institution. Also from different organizational perspectives, for example crewing and managing (human resources management), operations, finance and accounting, management, (organization) policies, etc.

The Curriculum for the Post Graduate Diploma in Shipping and Transport Management is structured into two semesters of classroom activities in the institution and on the field research for project writing. Each semester of institution-based activities shall be for duration of 17 weeks, 15 of which shall consist of teaching, practical exercise and continuous assessment activities, which the remaining two weeks shall be devoted to registration and examination.

 

4. POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MARITIME TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY
